mEDUXa Project released

Spanish version.

General Description

mEDUXa is a Free Software GNU/Linux distribution developed for educational purposes that is part of the MEDUSA project. It will be deployed in 35,000 computers distributed in 1100 schools, which represents 325,000 possible users (25,000 teachers and 300,000 students).the Canary Islands state schools. Teachers and students will be able to use it through a dual boot, accessing it by a boot loader.

Currently users only have access to one operating system, Microsoft Windows. They also have services like archives storage services, print services, different user profiles, security policies, etc. All of that with a unique global directory validation system, the Microsoft Active Directory.

mEDUXa's major goal is that user uses a Free Software distribution with the same functionality that they would have if they choose Windows, so they can both coexist.

The Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Canary Island Local Government chose local Free Software companies for developing mEDUXa. These companies are members of Canarian Free Software Companies Association (ESLIC Empresas de Software LIbre de Canarias). The companies are:

The following people or companies has also colaborate in this project: colaboradores.

Corresponding with the underlying architecture, the mEDUXa project has three levels:

The whole project has been developed under Free licences as defined by the Debian project.

This affects all modifications made to every package, module and document. In relation to the selection of applications, we have decided to include some that do not comply with those statements. This is particularly true for guideline number 6 “No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor”, because we have included some applications that are free to distribute only for educational purposes.

The inclusion of any material submitted under licenses different from the GPL, BSD and Artistic has been analyzed. On the one hand, this analysis has been made to distinguish whether the packages were due to included in the non-Free section, or in the general section; and on the other hand, very specifically to ensure suitability for educational use. There were specific concerns in relation to adjusting the licenses to comply with the European legislation (as enacted in Spain), and the possibility of future developments and improvements on the part of any Educational Administration, as well as ensuring the generation of synergies (ie re-usability by other educational, Spanish or foreign administrations), in the respect of the responsibility and other moral rights of the authors of this distribution. The stable version of the distribution will be released with a report on licenses.
